Old-Fashioned
A community created eternal format,
where old meets old-fashioned
About
Old-Fashioned is an eternal constructed format with all cards legal that have the old card frame (93/97) and have had their original printing since 1995. Old school formats like Premodern or 93/94(Old School) are enjoying an ever growing popularity. And in a way Old-Fashioned can be seen as Premodern Plus. That is also where the idea of the format started: Premodern is a very interesting community format sporting some of the most powerful spells in the game’s history.
So why Old-Fashioned? Old-Fashioned likes to add to the format by moving it from a “closed” eternal format (no new cards ever enter the format) to a slow shifting “open” eternal format. Like the Modern format of old where every cards entering the format had to pass through Standard, Old-Fashioned tries to be relatively stable while allowing new cards to enter the format. Wizards of the Coast has shown that they like to print cards in the old frame in low volumes for special occasions. Like with Ravnica Remastered, The Brother’s War retro artifacts or Modern Horizon Timeshifts.
These occasions are breathing a bit of new life into Old-Fashioned while not rotating the format completely and binding the format together aesthetically with Magic’s original card frame.
The format has unique card interactions between the (nearly) most powerful spells of old and new and powerful threats. With the format developing the goal is to strike a balance and reach a power level between Pioneer and Modern.
Decks archetypes can range from upgraded Premodern Decks (Terrageddon, Stifelnaught), through Extended Revivals (Ichorid Dredge, Elfball) and Modern or Pioneer amalgams (Phoenix, Tron).
Deck Construction Rules
Decks are built with a 60 card main deck + 15 card sideboard. All cards must have their original printing since the beginning of 1995 and must have been printed with the old frame. That does not mean you have to play the version with the old frame. You can play any version of the card!
But the rule of thumb is, does the card have the old frame, you can most likely play it. There is also a ban list to consult.
To make it easier to find out whether a card is legal in Old-Fashioned or not, you can this Scryfall search. Just search for the name of a card and you will see all Old-Fashioned cards with that name on Scryfall:
Ban List
Old-Fashioned is in its infancy. The ban list will most likely be subject to change in the upcoming months.
Similarly to Premodern, this format tries to find its unique niche between Premodern, Modern and Legacy. Therefor notable Legacy and Modern cards are banned. Most notably Brainstorm, Force of Will and the Fetchlands.
